lyrics

I bought myself this toy guitar
So I could grow up and be a star
Get my face in magazines
And play my songs on MTV
And that guitar meant the world to me

I got it at the corner store
For ten and change maybe more
The man there said to play and play
When my fingers hurt just keep on playing
But the man from the store, I can’t recall his name

This kid from school was down and out
His parents didn’t want him around
The other kids, they all played sports
He played with me down at the park
And he banged on them bleachers like a heavy metal star
While I strummed away on that old toy guitar ...

I went back home years ago
And heard that my old friend was gone
He shot himself in the skull
After shooting up our old school
And nobody went to his funeral

I still play that toy guitar
I pick it up it every day or so
It brings me back to younger days
I think about them like yesterday
But my old kid from school, I can’t recall his name
